ICE, has over the years been on the lookout for any law enforcement agency willing to partner with them to increase their effectiveness. The number of partnership requests has been low for numerous years. This year, however, the agency has witnessed an overwhelming increase in the number of partnership requests. In Texas, currently, the agency is boasting of 18 new partnerships with sheriffs.

The function of ICE, among others, includes tracking down and seeing to the deportation of illegal immigrants in the United States. Since ICE is a nationwide agency, it has numerous facilities to meet its mandate. This, however, has not been easy without the aid of local law enforcement agencies hence the need to employ their assistance in meeting their objectives. The new partnerships are thus a welcome addition to ICE and to the Trump administration’s deportation policies.

Basically, the ICE 287g program allows local partner law enforcement agencies to double up their officials as immigration agents. Officials in partnering agencies are thus allowed to enforce immigration laws including arresting suspected illegal immigrants. The functions of ICE had been undermined under the Obama administration due to the lack of focus on deportation. By the time the Trump administration took office, the number of partners in ICE had fallen to thirty eight. Currently, however, ICE has over sixty partners and is hopeful that more law enforcement agencies will be interested in partnering. The agency is focused on enforcing immigration laws as long as their budget allows.

Concerns have been raised by communities over the functions of ICE. While the agency insists that its mandate is purely to rid the country of illegal immigrants and in the process to reduce crime, the community is of a different opinion. There are great concerns over the effect that the functions of ICE will have on the already racially divided country with a majority of communities arguing that the agency is an avenue for racial profiling. An example is Arizona where the former Sheriff of Maricopa County was charged in court and found guilty of criminal contempt of court for willfully violating a court order to cease detaining suspected unauthorized immigrants. The partnership between the Maricopa County law enforcement agency and ICE was cancelled specifically for discriminatory practices of the officers.

Another concern is the fact that the program eats into resources that could be put into better use in the communities. Apart from using up tax payers monies, sheriff deputies are forced to take up immigration law enforcement duties hence making them unavailable for their normal duties.
